Maria needed 7 gallons of gas to fill her car. The milage odometer reads 38,800 miles. When the odmeter reads 39,016 Maria filled the tank with 12 gallons. At the end of the trip ahe filled the tank with 14 gallons and the odmeter reads 39,282 miles. How many miles per gallon did she get for the entire trip?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

She drove from 38,800 miles to 39282 miles. How many miles is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

482

OpenStudy (mertsj):

She filled her car with gas so she started with a full tank. At the end of the trip she filled it again so at the end it is the same as at the beginning. How many gallons did she use to go that 482 miles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

23?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

How did you get 23?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

26

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So if she went 482 miles and used 26 gallons, how many miles per gallon is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

19?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If you round to the nearest mile it is. I actually got 18.54

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Good job.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I rounded :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you sooo much!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Yep. It makes sense. Nobody says "I got 18.54 miles per gallon." And you're welcome.
