2x^3-x-3=0...i cant see any grouping that would help...so how am i supposed to solve a 3rd degree polynomial?

Are you sure you have the correct equation? There is a closed form solution (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubic_function#Cardano) But it is hairy. This particular equation has no nice roots.
