is hydroelectric power is renewable..or non-renewable...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If its renewable why do we worry about electricity nowadays...? we have plenty of water ..build dam and poduce electricity...why are we worry so much about electricity and saving energy..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how does saving electricity save nature...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The water itself is renewable, however damming up a river to create electricity changes the ecosystem already in place. Fish that once spawned at points above the dam may no longer be able to do so. and depending on the size of the project people will need to be relocated, look at the 3-gorges dam in China. How many millions of people lost their homesteads? We worry about the electricity for a few reasons, primary it does cost money, and in this economy if you can save a few bucks by not using an electric light, why not. Secondly most electricity is generated by means of fossil fuel steam turbine. Very few power plants are solar or wind based, which are by far the cleanest forms of energy capture.

OpenStudy (kainui):

The amount of energy produced by dams isn't nearly enough to make enough of a difference in comparison to the total energy used up. Saving electricity doesn't directly save nature really, except that all our energy comes from burning of fossil fuels which releases molecules called hydrocarbons into the air that can mess up the air.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand the reason in terms of money...But it seems that people from energy sector are worried more about environment than money....Fossil fuel consuption for electricity is the manor reason for that...But as far as I know hydroelectric power is one of the major method of electric power geneeration in the worild...and its renewable form of energy...Why cant we do more research on building DAM safely and reliably than spending millions of dollars in alternate energy forms such as fuel cells and solar cell..which to my knowledge is not going to be a practical solution for the energy crisis..(Fuel cell requires Pt metal, which is expensive as well as non-renewable...its reserve is declining similar to petroleum..)
