You might like The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. That's pretty accessible, and there's plenty of action. It's sci fi, set in a future time, but it's not so much about that time as it is the situation. (Some of the gadgetry would only be possible in that future time, and that plays a role in the story of course.)
