What is the importance of the African Campaigning in World War II by the Allies and Axis? Strategical? Economical?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mostly strategic. The oil fields in the Middle East were vital to the British and their allies to fuel their war machines. The Suez Canal was also a vital, strategic waterway. If the Axis had seized that, they would be able to control the only shortcut to east Africa and the Indian Ocean.
