It is sometime said that an electrical appliance "uses up" electricity .What does such an appliance actually use in its operation?

what it actually uses up is the kinetic energy of the electrons. The drift velocity (the average velocity electrons in the wire) decreases as electrons move into and out of the appliance. This is responsible for the potential difference across the terminals of the appliance.
