The crossing over the actual shuffling of genetic material between chromatids during the final phase of meiosis. Where as linkage refers to the location of the genes on the chromosome or its loci, the closer specific genes are to each other - the closer they are linked and the more likely they are to be passed on together eg so genes closer together on the chromosome are more likely to end up being passed on together and are said to be linked due to their close proximity to each other
