x^2-5x-6 is a trinomial, to factor it, you look for what adds up to -5 and what multiplies to -6. So you start with, (x )(x ). Since there are only minuses, you have a - and a +. (x+ )(x- ) What adds up to -5 and multiplies to -6? 6 and -1. So (x+1)(x-6) is the answer.
