is each sub-topic in a research paper supposed to be a long paragraph or a page?

It depends on how much content you want to place into the sub-topic. I don't think that you should limit to yourself to a page or a long paragraph, because the more content you put in and the more effort you place, then all the more you'd get a better grade.

Usually, the Abstract, the Title Page, and the Introduction only uses up a page. Other sub-topics including the Related Literature/Research, explanation, experiment, or any of the like would take up more space.
