emphysema is a disease in which lung tissue is lost. due to: most cases involve smoking which leads to the loss of lung tissue - for gas exchabge the minority of cases stems from a disease which is called alpha 1 anti trypsin deficiency, which in the lung causes, again loss of lung tissue (this disease have other manifestations) the result is what is called a barrel chest (due to the loss of elastic components of the alveoli. less lung tissue >> less alveoli for gas exchange, basically - the lung gradually cannot do its main function. extreme cases of emphysema may necessitate oxygen supplementation the disease, is irreversible i hope your question is purely academic and that your family is all well ps - this is not the forum to ask strictly medical questions. as it happens i am able to do so
