"On the Sabbath following his bar mitzvah...." Assume Sabbath = Saturday - Does this mean that this Sabbath is coming AFTER the bar mitzvah (which is an event ALSO occuring on a Saturday), or BEFORE?

Following means "behind" or "after", like if someone is following you somewhere, they are behind you. Before would be "preceding".
