I'm thinking something along the lines of 'never been done before'. You gotta do something different, like this essay I read a few days back. The essay was about how the characters/hero placement in the Harry Potter series was biased per house, like how the bad guys are Slytherin, how the good guys are Gryffindor, and Ravenclaw and Hupplepuff are just bleh. :D

Of course, I'm one to write about controversial topics that many people are uncomfortable with. Back when I was second year high school, I wrote an essay about the sexuality, entitled "Beyond Heterosexual". Never really passed it. It would've soiled my reputation as a good kid. :P

I was lucky to be a part of an open-minded community. The best and safest choice is to write something that may be slightly sensitive, but not sensitive enough to irk your audience. The corruption of today's Internet, perhaps. You can even write a whole descriptive essay about your favourite ice cream. With the right words with the right crafting, anything is bound to be interesting!
