two vertices of a rectangle are on positive x axis. The other two vertices lie on the lines y= 4x , y = 6 -5x. what is the maximum area of rectangle ?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

hey kasula where u frm?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

k i frgt wel

OpenStudy (aravindg):

could u sketch the fig

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its difficult for me to do on draw.....its quite easly if u try...figure!

OpenStudy (aravindg):

hm if u show a fig here i will help .coz i dont like spoonfeeding

OpenStudy (mani_jha):

Take the two vertices on x-axis as A(x1,0) and B(x2,0). The point D directly above A, if it lies on y=4x, will have co-ordinates (x1,4x1). The point directly above B is (6-5x2,x2). Now, a rectangle has maximum area if it is a square. So, all the side lengths will be equal. Now, try with the distance formula, and equate all four distances.
