How many main characters can there be in a story? Why?

There can be as many as you want. Why well simply its a story.

Well, there can be anywhere from zero on up. I say zero because a story does not have to be about people at all.

Peeps, good answer, but wouldn't an animal count as a main character if it was about it?
And I don't see how you could possibly make a story with an inanimate object.

True, an animal can be a character. I was thinking that a story can be about a tree, for example. People write about some weird things. But, now that I think about it, the narrator would be a sort of character in that case. Even though there is no dialog, SOMEONE is telling the story.
