Its because the dollar you still have doesn't get added. You borrowed 50 x 2 = 100

you paid back 1 x 2 = 2

so you owe 98

the dollar in your pocket is an asset not a liability so you subtract it from your debt

98 - 1 = 97 which is the  amount you paid for your shirt
