f Jamie and Nicole are buying streamers for their mother’s surprise birthday party. They need to buy purple and gold streamers. The purple streamers cost $2 per roll and the gold streamers cost $3 per roll. They have $25 to spend on streamers. Which of the following is a possible combination of streamers? A. 1 roll of purple streamer and 8 rolls of gold streamer B. 3 rolls of purple streamer and 6 rolls of gold streamer C. 7 rolls of purple streamer and 4 rolls of gold streamer D. 9 rolls of purple streamer and 3 rolls of gold streamer

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

Ah, right, so this one is fairly simple. Would you like me to walk you though it?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

walk it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

walk it out? Couldn't resist. So, essentially, we've got these two kinds of streamers... purple are $2 and gold are $3 per roll. So, we need to figure out which of the combinations they gave us will get us a dollar amount less than $25 for the total sale.

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

In essence, what this ends up looking like is a simple multiplication problem. So, I'm going to use the letters "g" and "p" to mean the number of purple and gold rolls you're buying. If you use those letters then the total cost of a sale will look like this: \[(2\times p)+(3 \times g)\]

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

So, the *possible* answers they give us are A. p = 1 and g = 8 B. p = 3 and g = 6 C. p = 7 and g = 4 D. p = 9 and g = 3 So, you just need to figure out which one of these combinations leaves you with a number less than 25. And that's your answer.

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

Do you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i do it would be b

OpenStudy (farmdawgnation):

You are correct! Excellent! :)
