Hi, so I feel really stupid, but I watched the first video and read the first three sections of notes, and I can't figure out how to actually run the programs. I can type them all into IDLE, but am I supposed to actually be able to ask someone what their last name is and allow them to type in a response?

You have taken the first step out of "stupid"....Stupid is not knowing and pretending that you know......Smart is not knowing and asking for help. Use a label or message box to ask the question and use raw input for the answer.

the idle shell has a File menu, select the New item from that menu. The new window will allow you to enter lines of code. When you want to run the program press F5 - you will have to save the file, use ,py for the extension to preserve the syntax highlighting - then your program should execute and the results displayed in the Idle shell.
