- literally means "those who serve"
- the military elite of Japan's feudal past
- sometimes hereditary; you were often born into a samurai family so were expected to take up the sword in the same way

Ah, okay! Well, just in case you have second thoughts, here's something for warrior to think about:

Mongol Warrior:
- excellent bowman on horseback; considered the best mobile infantry of the world at the time which gave the Mongols a huge advantage over many of their enemies
- if need be, they drank the blood from the veins of their horses and had horse's milk to sustain them on long marches
- their life was on the steppes and wide open spaces of Asia and their horse was highly prized; the samurai would prize their swords, but the Mongols prized their horses in the same way
- training was harsh and disciplined; the bow was considered their main weapon of choice
- like Samurai, for Mongol warriors, it was a way of life that they may have been brought up into
- armor and weapons used steel, though silk underwear was also used; it wasn't for comfort, it was to help protect against arrows from a long distance away and actually proved to be effective

As for battles:

For the samurai, you could focus on the Sengoku Period (Warring States Period) in which a number of ruling houses vied to unify Japan under one ruler. If you're a gamer, you'll recognize this as the setting of Koei's Samurai Warriors series.

For the Mongol warrior, there's a number of battles you could choose from depending on where you want to start. The conquest of China under Kublai Khan, or earlier with Genghis Khan's march westwards into central Asia and the destruction of the Khwarezmid Empire.

I guess it depends on which you feel most comfortable with. Both led interesting lives, but Samurai are typically romanticized making it relatively easier to find more material on what life was like as one. Your choice is a good, stick with it!

Samurai led very interesting lives. They honored their lords, fought to the best of their ability to defend their house from enemies, followed a strict code of conduct (bushido), and were often educated and cultured well above most of the people they fought over. In a way, they were Japan's versions of chivalric knights. They weren't "good" guys in shining armor, but if you were the boss, they were considered your best allies in a fight and your last line of defense. Or your first choice in leading an attack.

I read a lot, it helps! As for your journal, do some research and think of specific points to focus on to get started:

If you do samurai, you could start your first entries talking about growing up in a traditional household of samurai. Your father could be a samurai warrior who taught you and the next few entries could focus on what you thought about the training, your family's place, or the lord who you owed your loyalty to.

As a kid growing up in a samurai family, do you feel proud? Scared? Worried that you might not live up to your name? Confident that you can carry on your traditions?

Do you see the pheasants around you as potential friends? Or are they beneath you? Are you secretly friends with one of the "lower" classes and what would your family think? Do you live in a castle or a home close to it?

It's a good starting point for multiple entries if you want to go this way, and you don't have to go day to day. Remember, it's as much learning about history as it is making up a cool story with your journal.
