Indeed, but her question wasn't "subtract this number from that number."  It's "what is the common difference."  While what the question is asking might jump out at you, it might not jump out to someone else.

So I give her a high five for asking.  And I'll give you a high five when you ask a question that might seem obvious to others.  I know some of my questions have looked pretty obvious, that's for sure.

I'm pretty sure that someone who is far enough along in mathematics to know what an arithemetic sequence is also knows what is meant by "difference"
