what are non-stoichiometric compounds...?

They are compounds that do not have a rational relationship in composition. For example, a normal, stoichiometric compound would have the form A2B3. A nonstoichiometric compound would have the equation A2B3.132. They commonly result from a random number of vacancies in the lattice that lead to an average formula.
