Why is 'I wish she was here' incorrect, but 'I wish she were here' correct?

Singular subject in third person have s-ending, so I believe that "I wish she was here" is correct.

not really, it's kinda like the 2nd conditional. just like 'if i were you' but not 'if i was you'
