What is the difference between Electric Fields and Electric Potentials?

An electric field is present around a charge – either negative or positive. Any charged object can also acquire that field of electric force. A charge or a charged object has a force of whether to attract or repel a surrounding charge or object. Surrounding charges have also electric fields of their own with varying magnitude and this must also be taken into account. The electric field is a force that acts between two charges and it is somewhat analogous to the gravitational field force that acts between two masses. The only difference is that gravitational force will be dependent on the values of masses while electric force will depend on the amount of charges on objects.

Electric potential is nearly the same thing as potential energy, except that it has the charge of the particle divided out. Similar to how an object has potential energy U=mgh, where mg is the force and h is the distance, except that in electric force the magnitude of the force isn't based on mass and gravity, it's based on charge and electric field.

Electric potential is a scalar characteristic of an electric field, independent of the charges that may be placed in the field. However, when we speak of potential energy, we are referring to the charge–field system.electric potential at an arbitrary point in an electric field equals the work required per unit charge to bring a positive test charge from infinity to that point.
