the different classes are functionally defined that is some act on the enzymes that make the cell wall - like penicillin. Some also act on the cell membrane, disrupting it. Others act on specific metabolic enzymes like sulphonamide, which acts on an enzyme in folate biosynthesis. Bacteria without folate would not grow and thrive.
