You can find the answer yourself by just going to Wikipedia. I have my students do that. wmwendt

I got confused because of the change in the function of the KKK. The name "Ku Klux Klan" comes from the Greek word "kuklos" which means wheel, circle, or band and the word "clan", which means family. They took from this idea the symbol of a circle on member’s robes. On December 24, 1865, at Pulaski, Tennessee, during a meeting in a small law office, Captain John C. Lester formed the Ku Klux Klan. It began as a way to preserve southern formalities but turned into an extremist terrorist group rejecting all but their own beliefs. I just don't understand how it got so radical.
