Water is flowing out of a tank through a hose. At time t hours the tank contains 1000-12t-2t^2 gallons of water. The tank will be empty at t = hours. At time t=0, the instantaneous rate of change of the amount of water in the tank is gallons per hour.

1000-12t-2t^2=0 will tell you when it's empty. you'll get 2 roots, the postive one is meaningful: ~ 19.56 I honestly dont remember the rate of change thing--with it being instantaneous, you'll have to take a derivative to find it.
