OpenStudy (smurfy14):

Please help! A ship travels 98 km on a bearing of 38 degress and then travels on a bearing 138 degrees for 169 km. Find the distance from end point to start point and the angle of bearing to the nearest degree.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

End coordinates are (x,y)=(98 cos 52 + 169 cos 48, 98 sin 52 - 169 sin 48). After you have the numerical value for the coordinates, you can use the distance formula to find the distance, and take tan^-1 (y//x) to find the bearing from the origin to the end point.

Note that argument of trig functions in the first line above are in degrees.
