Did monarchs get their nicknames before or after death and why?

Maybe after? I guess they would have had anyone who gave em a bad name put ot death, or made their life miserable.

It's an extra credit for my AP European History class, because we too were puzzled on this event. Because some of them were named after great or infamous traits they were known for, but then others were named on apperance and such. Researching I find different contexts, some articles say that they were referred to as that by the common people of their time and historical. But just because they died, would they still be considered in their time? or does that mean they were given the nickname during exsistance?

I found one referring to Edward the Confessor as "the confessor" because he died naturally instead of for his faith. He was given the name to distinguish between Edward the Martyr.. so assuming it's after I believe. Because you can't really be titled how you die until it happens..?

But that sounds right jamroz. It's hard to examine a person's life until it ends. That's why the famous people are usually most noted when they die.

That's what I plan on reporting to my teacher, since some were noted for their death (Edward as a perfect example) or they were noted for things such as Edward King of the Sea which was dubbed to him by Parliament assuming that it was directly to him during his life span.
