To elaborate on the previous answer, yes, they began to export opium produced India to China, where selling opium was illegal. China's like...umm, no, and seizes a huge shipment of opium..Britain uses this as an excuse to declare what's now known as "The Opium War", beats the snot out of China, and thus led to the Chinese leasing Hong Kong to Britain and also relinquishing tariff rights on the territory.
