can anyone explain how to solve multi step equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have an example?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean by multi step equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Harry made a down payment of $525 on his car. This was 30% of the cost, plus $153 tax on his car. How much did the car cost?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First he paid $525, lets call this y Since y is 30% of the original cost(Lets call it x), plus tax that means that y = 0.30 * x + 153

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now you are left with the equation y = 0.30 * x + 153 where y is 525 We have to solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So we say 525 = 0.3x + 153 subtract 153 from both sides 372 = 0.3x divide both sides by 0.3 we have x = $1240
