Motion Problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Gordon Rode His bike at 15 mph to get to his car. He then drove back at 45mph. If the entire trip took him 8 hours, how faraway was his car?

Probably messed up last time. Let's say x is the total distance. x/15 + x/45 = 8 3x/45 + x/45 = 8 4x/45 = 8 x = 8x45/4=90 miles

These problems tend to be the same. First, remember D= R*T (distance = rate (or speed) times time) second, the distance going equals the distance coming back. Now, some equations. time going plus time coming back = 8 T1 + T2= 8 using R*T, distance on the bike is 15*T1 distance in the care is 45*T2. they are are equal, so 15*T1= 45*T2 T1+T2=8 now solve for T1 (or T2) and then find D
