The area of triangle A B C is twelve square centimeters. Each of the dimensions of triangle D E F is 3 times the dimension of triangle A B C . What is the area of triangle D E F ?

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

I'm assuming by dimensions you mean side lengths correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

I'm pretty sure that the area would then be 9 times your original amount, so \(9*12=108\)cm\(^2\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is what i came up with but i wasnt sure if it was right

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

Using a quick check with Heron's formula, if you increase the side lengths by a factor of \(k\), then the area increases by \(k^2\).

thank u for explaining it

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

You're welcome.
