I am both surprised and pleased by the announcement of his candidacy. Which is a verb in the sentence? 1.surprised 2.pleased 3.announcement 4.am

its 1 never mind :)

The word "surprise" can indeed be a verb, as in "I surprise you" or "you surprise me," but in this sentence the word "surprised" is not itself the verb. There are two phrases here that could be understood either as being verb phrases in the passive -- I am surprised, I am pleased (by something) -- or as the verb "to be" coupled with two adjectives. In this second rendering, the verb is "am" and the words "surprised" and "pleased" are both adjectives.
