Please help! Solve the equation and check the solution. 8/(x+4) = (5x)/(x^2-2x-24) - 1 What does x equal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried asking this question before, but it kept getting ignored. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you get that answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

factor the second denominator, cross multiply and solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm still really confused on this one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you say x=47/13, are you saying that the value for x is an improper fraction...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And how would you plug that in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually I get -47/13, replace that value for each x in your equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK. But still, how are you supposed to plug in a fraction into a fraction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would you change it into a decimal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correction 47/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait is the -1 in the denominator??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The -1 in not in the denominator, that's why I'm so confused! You are subtracting the -1 from the entire second fraction...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right. that changes a lot. hang on
