1. as R is increased the net current through primary circuit is reduced decreasing potential drop per unit length in the potentiometer wire hence it takes a longer balancing distance( null point) to equalize the potential of secondary 2. when S is increased it means reducing the terminal voltage of secondary circuit and hence it only needs smaller balancing length
