Why was the early west considered a "crossroad of culture"? (Short answer preferred) :)

many different countries from Euroupe were sending out explorers like France, Spain, and England. Plus, you had the cultures of the Native Americans that were already there.
Everybody was spreading their own religion, foods, even diseases. Thats where "crossroad of culture" would come from
