et x = amount of time given to commercials 4x = amount of time given to programming amount of time given to commercials + amount of time given to programming = 20 hours. x + 4x = 20. Add x-terms. 5x = 20. divide both sides by 5 x = 4. 4 hours are spent on commercials.
