As an overall PSA, their is some talk about curbing the giving of "answers" without any regard to offering a reason for the answer.
I'm reporting you -.-
This is the math section...ask math related questions
and also this type of conduct should be avoided
i got no idea how to get this to feedback, but if you wanna repost it :)
There should be a better format for this website so users are well aware of how to use it...
Would you like us to ask first if they are doing a test or not?
Yeah post it as a new question @amistre64
no real need to ask them if its a test; but perhaps if answers allowed more thinking on the parts of the questioner they would be more productive as a studying device
It's rather obvious if they are doing a test or not by their questions and we would avoid this if people explained the person asking the question because it takes a lot of time to learn how to solve a problem so they will just give up and go away.
Okay i will look out for that then
Yeah guys, we should explain them, make them work for the solution.
Yeah they are probably going to fail the exam but what they are doing is cheating...they should of studied before hand.
"cheating" is a hard action to define without knowing specifics
but yes, most times it is apparent lol
Yes, i don't want kids cheating on there test .
cheating on their diets, yes; on their tests?
what.?
Well then their is a complete different issue. Are these students taking an exam from an online university if so then it just shows that online universities are a complete waste of money.
we need to redefine the culture of this site, people have come to meet cheating, so the continue the trend... if only we can make the effort to ensure that whoever we're helping is actually learning what we're teaching them and not just in search of straight forward answers... i think we can get somewhere with this.
i think in even giving out answers we should hold off on it till they reach the conclusions and then can verify their results for them
personally ive just joined the site only been here prolly an hour or two, cannot speak for anyone else but, i joined to attempt to learn how i should solve equeations (5 years since college algera for me) so its been useful resolving the questions people here ask but in trying to help its difficult (for me) to give an approximate answer so far without giving away the full answer
i was outta highschool about 20 years before going to college :) i remembered half the math, forgot about a quarter of it; and was about a quarter i never knew to begin with
So are you guys against helping with homework?
those of us who spend our free time and efforts to help out here are not opposed to helping at all; its just the quality of help tends to be our concern
id guess its more about "giving away" the answer without explaining the math behind it, it would be better to explain how to solve the equations by giving formula, and similar example when able
@BobDylan we'll help you understand the concept.
you don't have to give approximate answer... it's about helping the user understand what's going on. if u solve something without explanation, that's a pure cos 90 situation. basically you either explain or engage the asker to solve the problem himself. it helps much better that way, and that's what this site is about... to help people
different points of view on a problem help out; sometimes all a person needs is a reminder to get the towards the solution as opposed to a fully worked up thesis on fuzzy logic and interdimensional tranverse waves lol
speaking from an Student perspective however... just being given the answer would not avail me on a test, my calculus teachers want the written work if i just gave the answer id prolly recieve a zero
yes, here at my college the math tests at least are show your work and they give no "options" to choose from
same here, except we are also required to do online, practice like test, that don't count for any points.
interactmath.com is a great free mathing resourse. lots of practice problems for all levels on there
its like mathlab but without the expense
i believe another good resource is http://www.khanacademy.org/ ive only used it a few times but it is helpful
Well I was asking that because I was just about to pm you amistre about helping me work out about 20 or so of these online questions, and I know you do this for free on your spare time so I would be willing to pay you for your help. Kinda like a virtual tutor :P
oh i appreciate the thought; but i tend to be more comfortable on here. im old and change scares me :)
post up the question to the left, im sure there are plenty of minds more capable than mine to help out.
my internet goes away in a few hours :/
lol, I'll try that, its just it normally takes 20-30 min wait to find someone that knows Calc II thats not busy
Jw, how many know Calc II here?
Point proven :P
