It tried to isolate the West Berliners from their allies in West Germany.

The blockade deprived the Berlin sectors controlled by the West of supplies such as coal and food. The West didn't leave the city hanging, however, and airlifted a massive amount of goods to help. 

The Soviets didn't want to start a war by shooting down the supply planes, so they had no choice but to let them bring in their goods and eventually, the blockade was ended.
