20^x=16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take logs of both sides x log 20 x = log16 / log 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

= 0.9255

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you know you have to take the logs do you just suppose to know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when the unknown quantity (here its x) is in the exponent as a general rule, take logs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not necessary for simple problems like 2^x = 4 2^2 = 4 so x = 2 but for anything a bit more complicated taking logs is the way to go

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok that makes sense thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in my first post second line should be x log 20 = log 16 sorry
