We have to find the missing side and the missing side for this triangle is a- our etcher says to use a squared+b squared= c squared but I'm confused

You want to solve \[a^2+24^2=40^2\]If you solve for a, you find \[a=\sqrt{40^2-24^2}=\sqrt{1600-576}=\sqrt{1024}=32\]So \(a=32\)
