This is an incredibly beautiful and well-written essay! Please know that most of what I took away or inserted was just me picking up on the rhythm and balance of your sentences and running with it. I tried to call those instances out for you in the first couple of pages, but I felt myself short of time towards the end. I'm trusting you to discern the difference between a small fix that is required in some way by grammar or syntax, and the sort of playing around with phrasing that I mean only as an illustration of what you might also do.
