In short, the "New South" was a term used to describe the Southern US after the Civil War. The economy of the South was heavily reliant on slavery and now had to retool their industry and manufacturing ability in new ways. It was a South without slavery. They managed to do both, though there would still be lingering race issues that would continue to plague many areas well into the 20th century.
