Could a Thermonuclear bomb detonated deep beneath the ocean cause a Tsunami such as the one that destroyed some of Japan? If it is enough energy then I'm going to suspect that North Korea did this just as their leader new he was about to die. If it is he will have made a huge statement for whatever causes he believes in. I'm glad his son has agreed to curb nuclear weapons tests in exchange for food. Peaceful or Ransom? Either way the world always needs to pay or force peace.

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

For the earthquake the total energy released (seismic moment (M_0) ) was about \[3.9×10^{22} Joules\] The most energy ever released by a thermonuclear weapon is about \[2.10\times 10^{17} Joules\] The earthquake takes about 10^5 times as much energy as can be delivered by a single such explosion So it would take about 100 thousand of the most powerful thermonuclear weapons ever detonated to generate a earthquake of this magnitude. Your suspicions are false.

Thanks I agree with you Mother Nature is very very difficult to accurately reproduce......thanks for providing a little clarity for my mind. :)

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

however the energy required for a earthquake take a lot of time to build up, i can imagine that you could maybe set off an earthquake early with a bomb, getting more energy released than you put in

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The rest is up to speculation until the secret documents are unearthed .....thanks for your time!

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

i will not speculate about document i have not read

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will how else does conspiracy theory get started......see you in the tabloids!

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

haha

OpenStudy (dominusscholae):

Probably not. Tsunamis work by just uplifting the ocean. Most of the nuclear energy, I imagine, would go into evaporating the water around it rather than actually moving the water.
