A swimmer's time in the 100 meter backstroke is 58 seconds when rounded to the nearest whole number. Name the fastest and slowest time possible in decimals rounded to the hundredths place.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is a simple rounding question. If 58 is the number that has been rounded to, and the hundredths place is 2 spaces after the decimal we have to use this information, and our knowledge of rounding (any value .5 or higher goes higher, any value under.5 goes lower) to find the highest and lowest possible times. So the highest number rounded to the hundredth that equals 58 would be 58.49 seconds, and the lowest would be 57.50seconds
