Its primary role is to synthesize the ribosomes and its subunits. As mentioned, ribosomes produce proteins. So, it's not the main function of nucleolus but...., nucleolus also contributes in the production of the protein but in an indirect method. About half of the percentage of the nucleolus, contributes the overall production of the RNA. Its role is accredited to the abundant number of r-genes.
