Number of chromosomes in a cell is characteristic of each species. Human being has 46 chromosomes in each somatic cell distributed in 23 pairs. Every pair is formed with similar chromosomes; this similarity is determined by size and shape. For this reason, chromosomes that form each pair are called homologous chromosomes.
