Will someone help me understand a characters personality

What specifically would you like to understand? A Characters personality is wholly dependent on you. Some people use the personalities around them or what they have seen, some make up personalities but all in all it's what you take in.
If you are not writing the Character and the it's someone you are reading about then it usually has something to do with the way they are described, or certain actions the Character has. It all depends.

If you met the boy, how would you describe him to me? Funny, weird, laughs too much because he's nervous, outspoken, quiet, talkative, paranoid?

Hard working and determined and adventourous are personality traits as far as I know, you just have to see what makes him, him, what makes him behave the way he does, what makes him think the way he does and that is part of his personality.
