Grammer question here. In the sentence "One in three truck drivers _ poor." Should it be "is" poor or "are" poor. In other words, is the subject "one" or is it "truck drivers"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Believe that the subject is plural because it is talking about more than one truck driver.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the subject is "one" ... thus making the appropriate verb "is" "in" is a preposition "three truck drivers" are objects or modifies of the preposition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

'Is' would be correct since you're speaking of only one driver
