I wouldn't neccessarily call them 'steps' more things done by humans. In a sense it begins with poaching depending on the animal, commercial hunting or fishing without restriction and things like that lead to extinction of certain animals.

Species belonging to any particular environment with a limited gene pool can only adapt within said limits. So if the environment changes drastically and there aren't individuals in the population with traits suited to that environment the new environmental circumstances may lead to extinction. An introduced species could lead to such an environmental change in the form of competition over resources, or it could be climate change, or a beaver builds a dam that wipes out the breeding habitat of a particular species, really just about anything could do it I imagine if the population was small enough and isolated enough.
