It's a right triangle. You should probably memorize 3,4,5 as the legs of a right triangle. This means any scaled version of 3,4,5 For example, multiplied by 2: 6,8,10 It can save time, because these problems use 3,4,5 (or a multiple) a lot Also sometimes used is the 5,12,13 (another right triangle)
not sure how you get a 12 a^2+b^2 = c^2 (c is the longest side) 6*6+ b^2= 10*10 36+b^2= 100 b^2= 100-36 b^2= 64 b= sqrt(64) b=8
